Rinse rice. Combine 4 c. water, 1 c. rice, and salt (optional) in heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover loosely, simmer for 45-60 mins. or until rice has puffed and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff with fork, cover tightly, let stand for 5 min. Add butter, margarine, salt, or spices to taste.
